UMD    CECD

College Park, MD, June 8, 2013

On June 6-7, 2013, CECD hosted a Critical Materials Workshop at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois. The workshop was specifically designed to complement the companion Symposium on Strategic Materials that was held at the University of Maryland on June 12, 2012.

The 2012 symposium was primarily a regional event with participants coming from the States of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. The predominant research expertise at the symposium was in the areas of batteries and fuel cells. The 2013 workshop was designed to be a national event with participants coming from 12 States (California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee) and the District of Columbia. In contrast to the first event, the Argonne event purposely sought to attract research experts as a majority of the participants. The purpose of gathering research experts was to emphasize the perspective of rare earth element and critical materials scientists on what would distinguish a Defense critical materials research program from the current research programs.
