On April 4, 2009, the Maryland Senate passed a resolution to honor CECD Director, Prof. D.K. Anand. Prof. Anand received this honor in recognition of his leadership over the past five decades in making the State a leader in research and engineering. His personal scholarly contributions include 6 books,185 journal papers, running a highly successful engineering firm early in his career, and most importantly, guiding and nurturing a whole generation of students who have gone on to successful careers in government, industry, and academia.

From L-R: Mr. Robert Kavetsky, Professor D.K. Anand,
and Senator Mac Middleton

During Prof. Anand’s 10 year tenure as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park the Clark School of Engineering has rapidly risen through the ranks of engineering schools in the country, currently ranked 17th. This rise in ranking is due in no small part to Dr. Anand’s settling for nothing less than excellence from both himself, and his colleagues and students.

In 1998, Prof. Anand turned his talents and energies towards the field of energetics, establishing the Center for Energetic Concepts Development (CECD) at the University, which to date has garnered over $10M in research funding, producing critical ideas for the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Indian Head, and 11 PhDs and 33 Masters Degree students. In 2006 Prof. Anand established the Energetics Technology Center (ETC) in Southern Maryland, as an extension of the CECD. The ETC is dedicated to making Charles County in particular, and the State of Maryland in general, an energetics center of excellence, vitally important to the security of the nation.

The State of Maryland considers Prof. Anand to be one of its critical natural resources. His insistence on excellence in all pursuits has helped shape the careers and fortunes of many young engineers and scientists, all to the betterment of the State.

Governor Martin O’Malley acknowledged Prof. Anand’s contributions to the State by declaring Saturday, 4 April 2009, Dr. Davinder Anand Day, his 70th birthday.
