College Park, MD, December 15, 2010

CECD in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong sponsored a three-day Workshop on Energetics-Past and Present. The workshop was held December 7-9, 2010, at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park in Hong Kong. The purpose of the workshop was to lay a foundation for a fundamental research collaboration between the CECD and Chinese energetics scientists and to develop new friendships among scientists and engineers sharing a common interest, energetics. This workshop is the first in a series of global workshops on energetics that CECD will be conducting over the next few years. CECD chose to hold the first workshop in China to honor China’s historical and current leadership and innovation in this important field.

The workshop was attended by nine Americans, seven Chinese, one Korean and several students from the City University of Hong Kong. The U.S. delegation was led by Professor Davinder Anand, the Director of the CECD, and included the University of Maryland Professors James Short, Michael Pecht, Michael Zachariah, Bryan Eichhorn, and Hugh Bruck. Also participating were Mr. Robert Kavetsky of the Energetics Technology Center (ETC) in La Plata, Maryland; and Dr. John Fischer and Mr. Robert Kaczmarek of the United States Department of Defense, who participated as observers. The seven Chinese participants included Dr. Li Ming of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) at Mianyang. From the Beijing Institute of Technology were Professor Tonglai Zhang, Professor Chen Lang, and Dr. Hao Huang. From the Nanjing University of Science and Technology were Professor Guangbin Cheng, Dr. Hongwei Yang, and Professor Yi Cheng. There was one participant from Korea, representing the Seoul National University, Professor Jai-ick (Jack J) Yoh. Professor Short, who is known among energetics scientists in China due to having been the Chairman of the International Detonation Symposium for 20 years, led the workshops. IIn preparation for the workshop, Prof. Short, Mr. Kavetsky, Prof. Pecht, and Prof. Anand published a book titled Energetics Science and Technology in China. The book summarizes the long history of energetics in China, starting with black powder more than 2,000 years ago; and also summarizes current energetics research in China by offering hundreds of references to journal articles published in the past 40 years and offering abstracts of those articles. Some of the abstracts are included in the book but the majority of them (over 1,700) are available on the CECD website. The book is the first in a geographic series of energetics book written by CECD faculty. For more iinformation about the book, click here.
