In this research project, an approach is developed for formulating a new class of nanostructured energetic materials that can exhibit superior impact sensitivity and energetic properties. This approach is a result of previous research efforts that have demonstrated the viability of using techniques such as Twin Screw Extrusion (TSE) for processing polymer composite propellants with gradient architectures. Utilizing gradient architectures, it is possible to pursue a combinatorial approach to understanding how the addition of nanoscale ingredients, such as nanoparticle, affects the structure and properties of the nanostructured energetic materials. In particular, the ability to control the impact sensitivity and energy release rate through controlled dispersion of a hierarchy of microscale and functionalized nanoscale ingredients is being studied. The combinatorial approach facilitates a rapid and cost-effective exploration of a plethora of formulations and their associated microstructures. The relationship between the microstructures and corresponding properties is being be elucidated through mechanical and combustion testing. Through the combinatorial approach, a powerful tool is now available to the energetics community to quickly and easily realize superior nanoproducts in a experimental approach to the design of nanostructured energetic materials. These nanostructured energetic materials are especially of interest for Combat Safe Insensitive Munitions (CSIM) applications that are of interest to the Navy.
